The Invisible Measuring Tape

How often do we measure ourselves using someone else’s ruler?

Somewhere along the way, many of us begin to believe that our worth can be measured by achievement, appearance, success, status or the approval of others. Without realising it, we slowly build an identity around external markers – not because they truly reflect who we are, but because they help us fit in.

Yet the irony is this: to become fully visible, our inner world and outer world must eventually meet.

Over time we become selectively invisible. We learn which parts of ourselves are acceptable and which parts feel safer to hide. We soften our opinions, shorten our stories, over-adapt and quietly shrink – not because we lack value, but because somewhere we learnt that visibility came with emotional risk. These strategies may once have protected us, but they often become the very things that keep us small.

Sometimes the work isn’t getting a seat at the table. Sometimes the work is remaining seated without apologising for your perspective, shortening your story, editing your truth or rushing to make everyone else feel comfortable.

Authenticity is not about becoming someone different. It is about allowing who you already are to become visible – without the fanfare, without performance and without needing permission.

A flower never tries to become an oak tree. Yet how much of our lives do we spend trying to become something other than our own nature? Somewhere along the way, many of us quietly conclude: Who I am is not enough. So we compare, we adapt ourselves and become fluent in other people’s gardens.

As children, we are rarely measured from the inside, instead, we are measured from the outside. Am I smart enough? Pretty enough? Sporty enough? Successful enough? Chosen enough? Enough. Enough. Enough.

Without even noticing, life becomes one exhausting equation. An invisible measuring tape that we carry into every room, every relationship and every conversation. Where we quietly ask ourselves: How do I measure up?  Perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question – what if we started asking – How do I show up?

How might our lives be different if we shifted from evaluation to presence? A flower never apologises for being a flower. It doesn’t compare itself to the flowers beside it. It simply unfolds according to its own nature. Not because it is arrogant but because that is it’s truth. Can you imagine if flowers spent all of spring comparing themselves – spring would never arrive!

Legitimacy is knowing that you have the right to be here. Confidence rises and falls but legitimacy doesn’t. Confidence depends on circumstances and legitimacy comes from recognising your inherent worth.

Comparison keeps looking around the room for evidence that you shouldn’t be there but belonging simply sits down. Stop measuring yourself against someone else’s ruler as comparison guarantees that everyone loses. The flower cannot become the tree. The tree cannot become the flower. Each can only flourish by becoming fully itself.

Perhaps healing is not about learning how to bloom. Perhaps it is about putting down the invisible measuring tape we have carried for so long. A flower never questions whether it deserves to bloom as blooming is not something it earns. Blooming is simply what happens when it receives enough light, water and space.

Perhaps we are no different and our healing journey is not becoming someone else. It is remembering that we were never meant to measure our worth against anyone else’s. It is trusting that we already have the right to be here. And like the flower…..Becoming what we were always created to be.

Healing begins the moment we put down the measuring tape and start living from our own truth.  A flower does not bloom by comparing itself to the garden – it blooms because it trusts its own nature.
